Augusta Abogados in the face of war in Ukraine

Augusta Abogados would like to express our deepest rejection of the decision taken by the Russian Federation to start the current armed conflict against Ukraine. We consider the invasion of this country to be contrary to international law and we join the other organisations that are currently calling for an end to this armed conflict in order to guarantee security and peace in Ukraine and in Europe.

As legal professionals, we can only endorse the statement made by the General Council of Spanish Lawyers that “The use of arms and force will never be the appropriate instrument in the resolution of disputes between countries. As defenders of the law, Spanish lawyers believe that the world has the appropriate legal channels for the claim and resolution of any conflict between nations. War will only bring death, destruction and poverty to the Ukrainian people. Our thoughts are with them today, as well as all our solidarity“.

For the time being, the measures adopted by various states and international organisations are limited to the imposition of sanctions and restrictions mainly of an economic nature, aimed at individuals and entities close to Russian and Belarusian circles of power and at certain types of financial and commercial operations. In the case of the European Union, these measures have taken the form of a comprehensive package of provisions published in the Official Journal of the European Union as of 23February 2022, extending the existing restrictions agreed in 2014 on the occasion of the Russian annexation of Crimea.

At Augusta Abogados we have reinforced our internal protocols to ensure compliance with the sanctions imposed by the European Union.

We have also launched a first internal campaign to collect medical supplies and basic necessities to be sent to the Ukrainian population. The first consignment of the collected material left a few days ago for Poland, to be distributed to the various health care centres. We are also in permanent contact with our colleagues in Ukraine to provide the support they may need at any time.
