Questions of personal data protection in connection with the digital vaccination certificate

Our German colleague, Selcan Özbek, LL.B. (Berlin), who did an internship in our office, has published an article in the legal journal “Informaciones” edited by the AHAJ on “Questions of personal data protection in connection with the digital vaccination certificate“.

The digital “EU COVID certificate” is supposed to help as proof of vaccination in various areas of life (travel, visits to restaurants and entertainment venues, retail, etc.). A uniform EU-wide regulation appears with increasing vaccination coverage of the population, as a practical instrument to participate in social life, especially through the simple and fast scanning of a personalized QR code. According to Art. 5 GDPR, the controller must comply with the data protection principles for e.g. the so-called Corona-Warning-App when generating the vaccination certificate.
